What is Photo Treatment ?

A Painless Alternative To Surgery

Photo treatment for oral cancer, specifically Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) and Photo Biomodulation (PBM), involves using light to activate photosensitive drugs or agents to selectively target and destroy cancer cells.

PDT uses light activated photosensitizers to produce reactive oxygen species that kill cancer cells, while PBM applies low-level light to modulate tumors, promote healing, reduce inflammation, and reverse tissue damage.

Oral Check

Who Should Get Checked ?

  • 1. Have history of oral cancer or precancer or any other oral health concerns
  • 2. Having white or red patches in the mouth
  • 3. Experiencing difficulty in mouth opening
  • 4. Encounter persistent ulcers, pain, or burning sensation
  • 5. Experience changes in tongue movement or speech
  • 6. You are a tobacco user in any form – smoker, hookah consumer, ghutka, paan masala or khaini chewer, etc.

Even if you feel healthy, an annual photo scan could save you from diseases.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Photo diagnostics is a medical imaging technique that uses light often in the form of special dyes or fluorescent markers to detect abnormal tissues, including cancer. It helps doctors visualize and identify diseases more precisely, often before they’re visible using traditional imaging. In oral health, it can help spot early signs of oral cancer or lesions.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is generally not painful during the treatment itself. However, some patients may experience: - Mild burning or stinging during or after light exposure - Redness, light swelling, or sensitivity at the treated site - If internal tissues (like the mouth or throat) are treated, soreness may occur temporarily Pain is usually manageable with over the counter pain relief, and most side effects fade within a few days.

In India, PBM therapy typically costs between ₹500 to ₹30,000 per session, depending on the severity of the treatment required. It is commonly used for pain relief, oral healing, and supportive cancer care.

In many cases, yes PDT can: - Treat early stage cancers or precancerous lesions - Reduce or eliminate abnormal tissues without cutting - Be used repeatedly if needed However, for advanced or deeply invasive tumors, PDT may not replace surgery entirely but can complement it or delay the need.

Tobacco users especially smokers or those who use smokeless tobacco should do self oral screening at least once a month and report any unusual sores, ulcers, and pain. Some guidelines recommend: - Every 6 months oral cancer screening for high-risk individuals (e.g., heavy tobacco and alcohol users) - Annual oral screening for all tobacco users by specialists Screenings can be done by a dentist or medical provider as part of routine checkups.
